Following the violent upheaval of the Second World War, several thousand Ukrainians settled in Britain. Some came as refugees and Displaced Persons, former forced labourers taken from their homes and transported to Nazi Germany. Others had been in the Polish Armed Forces or came via European Workers Schemes. Some were Prisoners of War, former soldiers of the SS Galicia Division, being held by the British.
Today their descendants make up the Ukrainian British Diaspora.
Very little has been done to record their names and stories for posterity, often incredible tales of survival and resilience, as well as important historical accounts demonstrating the political and social complexities of Eastern Europe, and the difficult nuances of wartime Europe.
This website is intended to be an ever growing online archive of their stories.
It is dedicated to my own grandfather, Jurko 'Frank' Osadciw, a proud Ukrainian, and to the many other proud Ukrainians who have gone before.
